Examples of a bad town house configuration: slot home (tuck-under town houses perpendicular to the street). One example is loaded in the middle of the lot, and the other is loaded at lot edges.
TRIPLEX STACKED
(TRIPLE DECKER)
Diagram showing how building is broken down into units.
This type has a small-to-medium-sized structure that consists of three dwelling units stacked on top of each other on consecutive floors. This type is basically a stacked duplex with a third unit added above. The stair to the upper-floor units is often shared. Because they have only one unit per floor, stacked triplexes can often fit on lots as narrow as 30 ft. wide, especially if the lot has an alley.
This type typically needs thoughtful application due to the third story. In more sensitive contexts, the third story of this type could be required to step back to keep the two-story appearance at the street. In less sensitive contexts, the third story can be expressed at the front of the building/lot at the street edge.
These types are prolific on the East Coast but also exist in West Coast cities such as San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Sacramento.
